Surveillance Data

The Montana Department of Public Health and stroke neurologists in Montana have begun collaborating on stroke and cardiovascular disease projects. Basic epidemiologic topics have been the focus to date listed herein. In the future it is anticipated that Montana Stroke Initiative members will also participate in stroke-related Surveillance Data projects.

Availability of Diagnostic and Treatment Services for Acute Stroke in Frontier Counties in Montana and Northern Wyoming

Resources and technology necessary to provide quality acute stroke care were available in approximately half of hospitals in the frontier counties of Montana and northern Wyoming. A stroke network model could enhance care and improve outcomes for stroke victims in frontier counties.

Defining Disparities in Cardiovascular Disease For American Indians:

The prevalence of CVD risk factors among American Indian adults in Montana is high, and for many of the risk factors, has increased significantly over a 5-year period.

Perceived Risk for Developing Stroke Among Older Adults

Many adults with multiple risk factors do not perceive themselves to be at risk for stroke. Clinical and public health efforts are needed to increase awareness of the risk for stroke.
